The stubble has weathered really well now so this field is perfect for this Sunday. Those of you who have dug on this field will have an idea of the hot spots for medieval hammered silver coins. Two of these are alongside the A31 and each dig we have here turns up more from short cross through to Elizabeths and Jameses. This field has been interesting for its wide range of finds along the historical time line with the oldest being a superb Bronze Age gold triple ring that has been disclaimed as treasure now. This was found on our previous dig here just last year. An Iron age silver unit was also found last year, not many Roman coins granted but this field has turned up Roman brooches of different shapes and sizes.
This field is vast and would have been the southerly slopes of what we call Roman Ridge except that the Watercress line cut this field during construction in Victorian times.
Parking will be on the stubble and with a dry week forecast, this will be no problem unlike the past weekend's Atlantic storm. I think it was wise not to have held a dig that weekend.
